Artist Statement
Self Portrait, 2022
I am a digital illustrator, ceramic sculptor, and surreal acrylic painter. Each of my pieces are an exploration of worlds and creatures that don’t have a place in reality or combine nature with irregular forms. I create work that initiates more questions than it answers by utilizing abstract forms, vibrant and oftentimes unnatural colors, and illogical scenes that spark fantastical wonder and embrace the unknown. I believe that the best way I can improve my work as an artist is to push myself beyond my unwritten limits and truly understand what it means to be limitless. To me, art is a great experiment where I can apply all of my imagination, dreams, techniques, and craziest ideas into visual stories.
I have always been drawn to how I can push my visual storytelling further, beyond what viewers may expect. To me, being “limitless” is to deny the expected and at times reject the desirable. To evoke surprise, awe, and confusion in viewers, I use experimental glazes and firing techniques, multimedia sculptures and collages, and multi-textured paintings. My artworks have a presence of their own; I go beyond the canvas and view my paintings as three dimensional objects and play with the edges of the canvas and the spaces they are bound to. My ceramic sculptures evoke a sense of breath, motivation, or personality in the pieces; each sculpture or vessel has a story to tell and a soul.
I believe that the sense of touch is underutilized in the art world, so I invite the viewer to touch and experience art in another sense in my ceramics sculptures and texturized paintings. My art practice is motivated by my attempts to understand what viewers will be drawn to, what makes them step closer, and what makes them reach out and touch.
My goals for the future of my artistic practice are to continue to explore fantasy and surrealism across both digital and physical means in scales that I have yet to tap. I am working on sculptural installations that create a three dimensional space for viewers to experience my imagination in a tangible way. I will also be working on incorporating my digital art into video and projection experiences. As a hobby sewist and textile enthusiast, I will be exploring how I can encourage the use of fabric and embroidery in my works.
